I've read elsewhere that this can be solved by downloading an older version of word but having followed the link provided I wasn't able to download an old enough version to get functionality back.

To do so, in Mendeley Desktop, go to Tools Install MS Word Plugin.The plugin is available for both MS Word for Windows and Mac.
